The 1996 Topps Baseball base cards feature a simple yet elegant front design. Photos extend almost full-bleed, bordered by a thin white frame. A delicate ribbon serves as the nameplate, showcasing the player’s name in striking gold foil. Adjacent to the ribbon, a small headshot replicates the main photo, and each card proudly displays a small team logo.
Mickey Mantle is a prominent running theme woven throughout the 1996 Topps Baseball collection, honoring the Yankees legend who passed away the previous summer. A special commemorative card, number 7 in the base set, pays tribute to Mantle. This card spot was retired in 1997 and remained so for several years until Topps established an agreement with Mantle’s estate. Beyond this commemorative base card, Mantle is also the focus of several captivating insert sets. The Mickey Mantle Reprints reproduce all 19 of Mantle’s original base cards, spanning from his 1951 Bowman debut through his 1969 Topps card. The last five cards within this reprint set are notably scarcer. For Series 2, Topps reissued these reprints, this time utilizing Finest chromium technology.
